  1. Posting this to my pastebin because I can type it up on my desktop with my regular keyboard instead of an email on my phone.  The kids do the texting so fast, I've never been able to do that.
  2.
  3. Finished up the work weekend tonight on mobile data.  I've been tracking my shift usage this week and it's about 250-300MB for a 12 hour shift.  That's not too bad.and manageable on mobile data in the meantime.
  4.
  5. I'm purposely keeping my usage very minimal because mobile data is costly.  NO YOUTUBE at all, which I miss.  I follow a few food youtubers and I always like to see what they're cooking, making, tasting, experimenting with.
  6.
  7. Speaking of food youtubers, I recently ordered popcorn kernels, coconut oil, and flavacol on Amazon.  Flavacol is this weird orange butter salt powder that movie theaters use to pop the popcorn in, that gives it the distinctive taste.  It comes in an old fashioned milk carton package.  So I've been enjoying making popcorn in a pan on the stove with flavacol like the youtubers.  It's taken me a few tries, but I'm starting to perfect the technique.  It all moves very fast once the oil heats up and the test kernels pop.
  8.
  9. I have TinyTinyRSS on my staff VPS.  If  you don't know what an RSS feed aggregator is, basically I have a service on my server that fetches news feeds from a lot of different sources and I can view news articles in my browser like an email inbox.  There's an option when I log in to "limit bandwidth usage" so it doesn't load images.  So I'm able to keep up with my regular news with very little mobile bandwidth usage, my server is doing the heavy lifting fetching RSS feeds.
  10.
  11. If this goes on much longer and it's not looking like the trees will be cleared soon, I can change my phone plan to 10GB data for $20/month.  It lets you renew early, so I'd probably just do that if I needed to top up.  With my current usage, I'm thinking it would be like $40/month if I had to do this long term.
  12.
  13. Working with OLPC and the XO where every MB of storage and data usage was costly and precious really trained me to manage this.  Not to mention working webhosting support.
  14.
  15. I'll try calling 311 on Tuesday after the holiday weekend and see if there's an update on when they're gonna clear the trees.  It's not my yard, I can't call a service and pay for it myself even if I wanted to.  Which would run hundreds of dollars.
  16.
  17. Maybe tomorrow I'll pretend I don't have any internet at all to save bandwidth and work on doing chores.  Goodness knows I need to fold laundry, do dishes, and break down boxes.
  18.
  19. I have no shortage of locally stored entertainment.  Besides my library of 4K ebooks, I have hundreds of GB of music, podcasts, movies, some TV shows.
  20.
  21. And then I'm not completely isolated.  I'm very worried about my neighbor Marcia.  She has no other connection to the outside world besides that  phone line that's currently trapped under thousands of pounds of tree debris.
  22.
  23. Anyone can post on my pastebin, just note that anyone can see it.  So nothing that wouldn't be on a postcard.  Or messages in a bottle.
